Reyes best Filipino finisher in Macau kart

Ateneo student Franco Victor Reyes led the Philippine Junior karting team in the Macau Kart Grand Prix of the Asian Karting Championships held on the Kartodromo de Coloane in Macau with a second place finish in the final heat of the premier Formula 125cc Junior Open class.

Reyes, 12, landed in 15th spot in the time trials, way behind the leading duo of eventual winner Kevin Susilo of Indonesia and ROK junior world champion Raphael Aguiar of Switzerland but, after three qualifying heats, improved to 11th position for the start of the pre-final ahead of RP team skipper Javi Benitez and teammates Joey Orduña and Robbie Benito, who qualified from 12th to 14th positions, respectively.

A miscue at the start by a foreign rival prevented Reyes, Benitez and Benito from taking their positions properly, while only Orduña managed to get a clean run. Orduña and Reyes recovered and finished in sixth and ninth, respectively, with Benitez and Benito close on their heels.

During the final, Reyes finally made a clean start and overtook Orduña on the second lap to take sixth spot behind Susilo, who dropped to fifth from pole position.
