Country Club shows way in Fil-Am two divisions

BAGUIO – Newcomer The Country Club’s Fil championship division team posted a staggering 32-point spread while its all-rookie squad in the Am championship division grabbed a seven-point advantage at the start of the championship division of the 59th Fil-Am Men’s Golf Invitational on Wednesday.

The Country Club’s Fil squad assembled 147 points in the first round in the premier division as national team mainstay Ferdie Aunzo carded 39 points while Antonio Asistio, Anthony Fernando and Dante Becierra all chipped in 36 apiece.

A far second was Eastridge, which garnered 115 points at the Camp John Hay Golf course. Mizuno Golf Team stood at third place with 109 while Sherwood Hills came up with 100.

Over at the Baguio Country Club, Joey Huerva submitted 34 points to tow The Country Club’s Am crew to 123 points. Peter Villaber’s 33, Art Arbole’s 29 and Brent Sumampong’s 27 provided the balanced offensive for the team.

“They showed a lot of heart today despite the first day jitters. I expect them to do better tomorrow,” said TCC team manager Freddie Mendoza.

Manila Southwoods, which is looking for another win since winning in 2003, was at second place with 116. The burly Vinluan led with 33, jungolfers Jikjik Abdon and Chepe Dulay contributed 30s and Tristan Tabanas added 23. Wolen Superal struggled with 16 and did not count.

Mizuno Golf Team limped with a 76. Ramon Garcia III (23), Bong Vilchez (22), Paolo Cagalingan (17) and Lovell Gopez (14) were the scorers.

In the Am Division Flight A, Sherwood Hills continued to dominate with a 205 after a 95 yesterday but its once formidable nine-point lead was trimmed to one by Camp Aguinaldo which pooled in a 103-204. Forest Hills Nicklaus followed with 102-199, Baguio Centennial I with 97-188 and Camp John Hay I with 86-171.
