The hunt for the titles comes to an end for the country’s talented junior karters as the 2008 Shell Helix Karting Super Series stages its championship round today at the Carmona Circuit Philippines.
With the ROK Junior Expert and the Cadet crowns already in the bag for Jet Racing’s Javi Benitez and Christian Gaddi, focus now shifts to the title showdowns in the ROK Junior Novice and Mini-ROK classes of this series sponsored by Shell Helix, Denso Iridium Power, PagCor Sports, Yokohama Tires, Motorstar Eastway Company and Aeromed Ambulance Transport.
The quest for the ROK Junior Novice plum is expected to be an intense showdown among frontrunning Renz Pazcoguin of Jet Racing, Joey Orduna of Ready2Race and Andres Calma of AUTS Racing.
Pazcoguin kept solo leadership with 440 points despite finishing only third in the last leg.
Orduna moved up second overall with 419 points as he guns for a crucial second straight sweep for the title clincher while Calma, who’s also backed up by San Miguel Corporation, is just three points shy in third place with 416.
The Mini-ROK class, on the other hand, leaves only Cebuano Tonyo Carcel and Christian Gaddi locked in an unpredictable duel for the plum. Carcel stays on top with 454 points but Gaddi pulled a sweep in the last race that hiked his total to 438 points to trim the gap to just 16.
And with 75 points at stake in this championship leg, anything can still happen.
Benitez is already assured of his second Junior Karter of the Year plum as he’s way ahead with 476 points in the ROK Junior Expert division, leaving John Alvarez of Maranello-San Miguel Corporation-Marcelo Racing and Robbie Benito of Ready2Race disputing the overall runner-up finish.
Gaddi also captured his back-to-back Cadet Karter plum but the Cadet 60 class remains an exciting race with the close three-way fight among Gab Dacasin (342 pts.), Basti Escalante of Ready2Race (290 pts.) and Jaz Monzones of GP1 Racing (270 pts.).
