RP tossers gain; surfing, pencak bets fall

BALI, Indonesia – The RP men’s and women’s volleyball teams advanced to the round-of-16 while surfing and pencak silat failed to deliver any medal Wednesday in the first Asian Beach Games here.

Rhovyl Verayo and Jonrey Sasing beat Sri Lanka’s Naween Sampath Peiris Warnakuiasooriya and Wasantha Rathnapala Bombuwal Dewage, 21-15, 21-17, in the men’s round-of-32 at the Inna Grand Bali Hotel in Sanur.

Verayo and Sasing will be up against Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) champions Andy Ardiyansah and Koko Prasetyano Darkuncoro of Indonesia, who scored a 21-11, 21-19 victory over Thailand’s Sittichai Sangkachot and Teerapat Pollueang.

In women’s division, RP-1 Michelle Carolino and Suzanne Roces beat Tsai Yin Feng and Wu Shu Fen, 21-15, 21-18, to advance against Kazakhstan’s Alexandra Turicusheva and Tatyana Maskova.

RP-2 Nerissa Bautista and Jusabelle Brillo, outclassed Aleya Khatun and Farhana Akther of Bangladesh, 21-11, 21-7, to move up against Thailand’s Usa Tenpaksee and Jarunee Sannok.

Over at Kuta beach, Carlito Nogalo and Dionesio Espejon both placed last in the semifinal round of the aerial surfing competition.

Nogalo, the shortboard bronze medalist, scored only 1.75 points behind Indonesian Adi Putra Made (14.55) and Japanese Yuichi Kurogi (3.00) in the semifinal Round 2 while Espejon did not get any points in the semifinal Round 1 where Indonesian Dede Suryana tallied 17.5 points and Japanese Shuhei posted 3.25 points.

In the pencak silat competitions at Tanjung Benoa beach, Analy Pinonggan ranked sixth among seven entries in the women’s tunggal (artistic) final while John Mark Coronel and Aldam Isdam was last among six entries in the men’s final.
