National University kicked off its rebuilding program, from academics to athletics, with an eight-storey structure soon to rise at the NU campus in Bustillos, Manila that will house a multi-purpose hall with a parquet-floored basketball court.
Hans Sy, whose family owns the SM chain of malls and holds majority of shares at NU, yesterday said construction has already started with the project expected to be completed as early as March next year.
“This is just the start of a four-year plan in rebuilding not just our athletic program but the whole school as well because the building will also house 60 classrooms plus the court,” said Sy in yesterday’s groundbreaking ceremony that coincided with the school’s 108th foundation anniversary.
However, the antiquated, wooden court, constructed after the Bulldogs last won a UAAP championship in 1954, located in front of the main campus in Jhocson St., will be left untouched.
Multi-titled coach Junel Baculi, NU’s new athletic director, said the new facilities will surely boost the morale of the athletes, including those of basketball and at the same time attract students.
“It’s a great way to start rebuilding,” said Baculi.
