Vera decisions Riptide in UFC debut
Fil-Am Brandon “The Truth” Vera scored a unanimous decision over Reese “Riptide” Andy in his light heavyweight debut in the UFC Fight Night at the Palms in
Vera, who used to fight in the heavyweight class, needed to shed extra poundage through diet and workout, which nearly took their toll on him.
“The 205 (pounds) cut was tougher than I thought,” said Vera in UFC’s official website www.ufc.com. “I didn’t think it affected me until Reese and I walked up and I was like ‘woo, I’m tired.’”
Vera, who won via scores of 30-27 twice and 29-28, chalked up his ninth victory against two losses.
Reese, a former all-American wrestler, dropped his UFC debut and second overall in nine MMA (mixed martial arts) fights.
The win came after the 30-year-old Norfolk, Virginia native, fighting out of San Diego, California, dropped a pair of heartbreaking losses to Tim “The Maine-iac” Sylvia in UFC 77 and Brazilian Fabricio Werdum in UFC 85. – Joey Villar
