Unbeaten Star trounces FESI, rules Pichay Cup
The Philippine STAR rode on an explosive fourth quarter surge to subdue Far Eastern Surety & Insurance Inc., 75-69, and capture the first Prospero Pichay Cup basketball tournament crown at the San Andres Gym in Manila last Wednesday.
Ver Roque and Dennis Rodriguez took over again for the STARmen, scoring five points apiece in the team’s decisive 13-0 blitz that turned a 57-58 deficit into a 70-58 lead,
The STARmen, who blew a 42-30 lead at the turn, then hung tough to thwart the rallying FESI cagers and pound out the win.
Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police edged Polymaster Industrial, 84-81, to bag third place.
Former Rep. Prospero Pichay awarded the trophies to the top three finishers of the tournament.
The win capped The STAR’s sweep of the tournament, posting a 9-0 record in the six-week event organized by the Association of Sports League (Manila) Corporation in cooperation with the Manila Sports Council.
It was also the STARmen’s third straight title, counting their romp in the Corpball and MPG Corporate tournaments, which they both swept.
Roque saved his best for last and topscored for The STAR with 20 points, highlighting his MVP performance with four triples. The spitfirish Rodriguez and Gio Coquilla tossed in 19 and 10 points, respectively.
The STARmen also shone in defense, shackling FESI’s bull-strong Anthony Cuevas, who struggled with six points before fouling out.
