RP junior tankers bag three golds

The Philippines continued to make waves in the 33rd Southeast Junior Swimming Championships in Bangkok, Thailand, winning three more gold medals yesterday.

Jessie Lacuna copped the 200-meter freestyle gold medal for 13-14 year-olds  in one minute, 58.57 seconds while Kezia Sarmiento grabbed the mint in the 200m backstroke for 11-12 years old girls in 2:30.95.

Capping an impressive day for the Filipinos was Jose Joaquin Gonzales’ victory in the 400m individual medley for boys 13-14 years old in 4:43.68.

It was the second gold medal for both Lacuna and Sarmiento, who earlier reigned supreme in 400m freestyle and 100m backstroke with times of 4:13.74 and 1:08.81, respectively.

Nikita Decera delivered a third gold for Team RP Friday with a win in the 400m freestyle.

Danjylie Cordero, who made the RP team to the 2005 Manila SEA Games at 13, and Charlie Walker captured a silver medal each in the 100m breaststroke and 200m free.

Decera also had a bronze in the 200m free to add to her medal collection. - Joey Villar
