NCAA board okays PCU seniors return

-

The National Collegiate Athletic Association recently gave Philippine Christian U the go signal to return to action in Season 84 and at the same time allowed the Dolphins to take a leave of absence next year.

“PCU would return in the 84th NCAA season but only in the seniors’ division,” host Mapua’s Ding Lozano, who chairs the Management Committee, told The STAR yesterday,

But Lozano said PCU, which joined the league as its seventh member 12 years ago, had voluntarily filed a leave of absence next year as part of an agreement with the policy board, which convened Tuesday.

“At the end of the season, PCU has volunteered to take an indefinite leave of absence,” Lozano added.

Lozano, however, didn’t explain why PCU is taking a leave but reports have it that the decision was a compromise between the board now chaired by Dr. Reynaldo Vea of host Mapua and PCU.

There were earlier reports that the league is set to suspend PCU for another year after a fact-finding committee said more players were allegedly involved in “identity switching” cases.

The Board, then headed by Dr. Vince Fabella of Jose Rizal, however, deferred from making an official decision until it sits down with PCU president and board member Dr. Oscar Suarez.

There were also reports that the league might entertain the application of a new member in the event PCU takes its leave. There were reports Arellano U, Emilio Aguinaldo College and former NCAA member Trinity College are keen on joining the league.

PCU is expected to field a team that would reportedly be coached by former pro Joel Dualan in basketball where reigning back-to-back champion San Beda is seeking a third straight title.

But the Dolphins, who won their first and only title in 2004 under rookie MVP Gabby Espinas, may no longer be as competitive minus pro-bound Jason Castro and Beau Belga.      – Joey Villar
