The cream of the cockfight breeders in the world once again converge in the country for second leg of the 2008 World Slasher Cup Invitational 8-cock Derby on May 20, 22 and 24 at the Araneta Coliseum.
Considered as among the most prestigious cockfighting events in the world, the three-day meet has attracted some 90 champion breeders including more than 10 from the United States and Australia.
Hosted by the Pintakasi of Champions and sponsored by Thunderbird Power Feeds, Sagupaan Complexor 3000 and Bacchus Energy Drink, the event will also feature top local breeders Jorge Araneta, Eddie Araneta, Patrick Antonio, Philip Chiongbian, the Ampilo brothers Rudy Salud, JV and Vic Magsaysay, Ito Ynares, Peping Ricafort, William Go, Patrick Puno, Wilvin Sy and Dong Lacson fielding their respective entries.
Philippine Olympic Committee president and former Tarlac Representative Jose “Peping” Cojuangco Jr., who topped annual event in 1991, 1993, 1995 and 1996, is also participating.
Gen Gen Arayata and Cyrus Hao, whose entry Super Clyde & KC ruled the first leg in January, are likewise joining the tourney.
More known as “sabong” in local language, cockfighting has been a way of life for Filipinos not only for the affluent ones but the ordinary blue-collar workers.
The sport traces its roots in Filipino culture from the Spanish colonial era centuries ago with the colonizers themselves enticed with it after discovering natives pitting cocks against each other.
