Burger King secures No. 3
Burger King leaned on Khiel Misa’s late heroics as it turned back Pharex, 69-65, yesterday to formalize its No. 3 seeding after the elimination round in the PBL Lipovitan Amino Sports Cup at the Gov. Ayong Maliksi Gym in
Misa, who played college ball for Perpetual Help, was held to just two points going into the final 17.7 seconds but completed a steal off Sean Co to shatter a 65-all count. He capped his endgame heroics with two free throws to seal the Whoppers’ ninth win in 15 games.
With the victory, Burger King will go into the quarterfinals on Monday with a twice-to-beat advantage against Pharex, which dealt four-peat champion Harbour Centre its only loss, 99-97, last weekend.
In the other game, Hapee Toothpaste downed five-peat seeking Harbour Centre, 86-75, to finish the elimination round with a 10-5 record.
The Batang Pier closed out with a 13-2 mark but remained the top seed in the semifinals.
The Medics actually finished tied with the San Mig Coffee Kings and the Toyota Otis Sparks with 7-8 (win-loss) slates but wound up with the lowest tiebreak quotient for a match-up with the Whoppers in the next phase.
