Lyceum outlasts Ateneo; AdU nears sweep

-

Lyceum primed itself up for the tough quarterfinal round as it foiled Ateneo with a thrilling 22-25, 25-18, 25-14, 19-25, 15-12, victory yesterday in the Shakey’s V-League Season 5 at The Arena in San Juan.

The win was Lyceum’s fourth in nine games as it hopes to finish the elims with an even card when it goes up against winless St. Benilde on Friday.

The Lady Eagles, still waiting for their Thai import following the departure of Jindarat Kanchana last week, wound up with a 4-6 (win-loss) slate.

Beverly Boto led Lyceum’s charge with 24 points, including 21 kills, while Dahlia Cruz had 18, Jane Jarin scored 16 and Syvie Artates tossed in 13 points for the Lady Pirates.

Ateneo, which forced the decider with a convincing win in the fourth set, drew 20 points from Ma. Rosario Soriano while Denise Acevedo, Patricia Taganas, Averil Paje and Misha Quimpo combined for 50 points.

Earlier, Adamson played just good enough to hold off St. Benilde, 25-21, 25-20, 25-22, and move with a win from completing a 10-game sweep of the elims in the league sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and organized by Sports Vision.

The Lady Falcons, heading for a three-week break with the San Sebastian Stags for clinching the two outright semis berths, sized up the Blazers in each set before asserting their might on the net at the finish to complete the romp in the 1:04.

Rizza Laguilles made 12 kills while guest player Neriza Bautista had 11 as the Falcons outhit St. Benilde’s top two spikers in Giza Yumang and Cindy Velasquez, who combined for 12 attacks.
