Ramos losing interest in PBA post?

- Joey Villar, Nelson Beltran -

With the PBA board announcing that the next commissioner could not be decided upon until July, Nextel president Lambert Ramos doubts if he can still make himself available for the position.

It appears Ramos is not so keen for the position anymore with the PBA board of governors still unable to make the decision a month after the candidates presented their plans and programs for the league.

Instead, the board, in a meeting Thursday, named officer-in-charge Sonny Barrios as permanent commissioner while shelving the search for the next commissioner until after the league has probably changed status from an organization to a corporate body.

The board named Barrios as full-time commissioner up to the end of the season sometime in July.

Ramos said January to July is a long period of time he may no longer be available for the job when the board makes the decision.

He didn’t hide his disappointment over the PBA board’s decision to keep hanging its final choice on who would be the next PBA commissioner between him and Atty. Chito Salud.

“It doesn’t sound right,” said Ramos on the board’s move making him and Salud to wait for at least seven more months to know the board’s final decision.

“They should have tried to find ways and means to finally resolve it. We’re asked to go through a tedious process. We did only to be told again that we have to wait,” Ramos added.

Salud couldn’t be reached for comment. Sources, however, said the lawyer son of former PBA commissioner Rudy Salud was also disappointed.

What came as a consolation to Ramos was hearing the news that he’s already enjoying the 5-4 edge in the latest balloting.

“What’s disappointing was thinking that they (the board) would finally resolve the matter. I was ready to accept whatever decision they make. If Chito is named, I have no objection. I’m sure Chito would do the same,” said Ramos.

Ramos believes he and Salud are both prepared and capable to handle the job.

“We have grand designs for the organization. I thought the league was ill and I could help with my experience,” said Ramos.
