Chua bats for majority pick as commish

-

PBA board chairman Tony Chua hopes  “compromise agreement” will do if the board remains deadlock in their choice for the next league commissioner after the fourth round of balloting today.

“I don’t see anyone changing their vote with the result likely to remain 5-4. In that case, I will call a recess and make an appeal to my fellow governors if we could resolve the impasse on a compromise agreement,” Chua told The STAR.

Chua’s idea is to call on the minority to give in to the majority, letting their choice to sit as commissioner for a fixed term of only one or two seasons.

“I would make the appeal for the good of the league. It would let us move on. Otherwise, we’ll never be able to break this deadlock,” said Chua.

“For all we know, the majority’s choice could really be a big asset for the league. If not, the board can replace him with another search after one or two seasons,” Chua added.

If the teams stick with their vote and accepts the compromise agreement offered by Chua, then Atty. Chito Salud could get the mandate after the board meeting today at the PBA office in Libis, Quezon City.

Sources said Red Bull, Magnolia, Barangay Ginebra, Welcoat and Coca-Cola were for Salud while Alaska, Sta. Lucia, Air21 and Talk n Text were for Lambert Ramos as they ended up in a deadlock after three ballotings last month.

Under the league rules, a candidate must muster a two-thirds vote from the nine voting members to get the mandate. The magic number is six.

Officer-in-charge Sonny Barrios is hoping the board resolves the issue soon, saying he’s available to do the job only up to the end of the ongoing Philippine Cup. – Nelson Beltran
