Miñoza fires 70, climbs to seventh

-

Frankie Miñoza birdied four of the last eight holes to salvage a two-under par 70 in a big rebound from a sputtering start as he moved from 12th to joint seventh but fell six shots off Kevin Stadler of the US in the second round of the rich HSBC Champions in Shanghai yesterday.

Miñoza, who shot a solid 69 Thursday, went two over with back-to-back bogeys linking the nines of the Sheshan International Golf Club. But the top Filipino shotmaker recovered his bearing with a birdie on No. 11 then fired three more on Nos. 14, 15 and 18 to close out with a 33 for that 70.

He pooled a 139 to join the group of Steve Webster (70) of Scotland, South African Louis Oosthuizen (68), Korean Yang Yong-eun (68) and erstwhile joint leader Niclas Fasth of Sweden, who skied to a 75 after an opening 64.

After a decent 71 in the first round, Juvic Pagunsan fumbled with a six-over 78  and  barely made the cut pegged at 150 with a 149.

But Artemio Murakami never recovered from a disastrous 80 and failed to advance with a 155 after a 75.

World No. 2 Phil Mickelson, raring to atone for his so-so showing in last week’s Singapore Open, fired a six-under par 66 and closed to within one stroke off Stadler with a 134.

Stadler played a steady round of three-under 69 and stayed at the helm with a 133 while Ross Fisher stood at 136 for third after a second straight 68.
