RP bowler completes romp, bags singles gold

-

Anne Marjorie Reyes’ 1291 effort in Squad A Tuesday proved enough to win her the gold medal in the girls’ singles as Malaysia’s Jane Sin Lin could only come up with a 1277 in Squad C at the completion of play in the 10th Asian Schools Tenpin Bowling Championships at the Mei Foo Super Fun Bowl in Hong Kong yesterday.

Korea’s Shin Bo-Hyun, who finished second to Reyes in Squad A, dropped to third and settled for the bronze medal with a 1265 while Squad B leader Bernice Lim Hui Ying of Singapore slid to fourth with a 1252.

But the 16-year-old Reyes faltered with an 1172 in the doubles with partner Alexis Sy, who made 1087, and dropped to second in the girls all events with a 2463 on a 205 average heading into the team event.

Shin took the lead in the all-events with a 2508 after a 1243 effort in the doubles while Korean Lee Mi-ryeong rolled a 1307 to move up to third with a 2449.

Roland Jumapao, second in the boys’ side with a 1284 in Squad A, dropped out of the medal race as Malaysians Zaid Izlan and Muhd Nur Aiman finished 1-2 with 1337 and 1297 for the gold and silver medals, respectively, after the completion of play.

Korean Choi Tae-seung came through with a 1296 to snatch the bronze with Jumapao settling for fifth behind fourth placer Marco Putra of Indonesia, who had a 1285.

Korea looked set to capture two gold medals when singles bronze medalist, Choi partnered with Shin Seung-Hyeon to take over the lead in the Boy’s Doubles with a 2555 in Squad B.

Despite a poor start in their opening game on 370, Choi and Shin bounced back in the second and third games with 424 and 453 to take over the lead from early leaders and Malaysia’s Mohammad Aziem B Azemi and Syimir Abdul Razak.

The Philippines’ pair of Vincent Reyes and Kenneth Chua combined for 2355 to finish eighth in a field of 41 teams.

The girls doubles tandem of Reyes and Sy struggled to wind up ninth with a 2259, way behind the pacesetting 2571 by Kim Mun-jeong and Lee Mi-ryeong of Korea.
