PNP tells travelers: Bomb jokes mean serious jail time

Conrad Fritz Bauzon poured all his 14 points in the fourth quarter as Henkel-Sista fashioned out a 70-59 victory over San Miguel-Magnolia to barge into the semifinal round of the PBL Unity Cup at the Olivarez Sports Center yesterday.

Held scoreless in the first three quarters, Bauzon went on a rampage in the fourth, helping the Super Sealers overcome a 10-point deficit en route to the victory and a semis clash with the Harbour Centre Batang Pier.

But Toyota Balintawak failed to join Harbour, Cebuana Lhuillier and Henkel-Sista in next round as it dropped a 68-73 decision to a resurgent Burger King in the other quarterfinal contest earlier.

Fil-Am Ryan Reyes saw action for just a minute due to a pulled groin muscle but Bauzon and the rest of the team stepped up to knock out the Beverage Masters, who had hoped of pulling off a win and forcing a playoff for a semis berth.

The knockout match is slated tomorrow.

“It showed we can win games by showing teamwork,” said Henkel-Sista coach Carlos Garcia.

Garcia gave credit to Bauzon and another former Perpetual Help hotshot Dom Javier, who scored 11 points in the first half.

“The Perpetual boys stepped up again, I’m glad they did,” added Garcia.

Banking heavily on their solid interior defense, the Whoppers took control with a bristling 15-4 run in the first seven minutes of final period, turning a 56-7 deficit into a commanding 71-61 lead.

Jim Viray starred in that run with four points, including a gutsy drive off last year’s MVP Joe Devance.

“We hope we could beat them again on Thursday,” said Burger coach Lawrence Chongson. “The momentum is now on our side. But we have to play better because we know they will come back.”

Quinahan also hauled down five rebounds, dished off three assists and had two steals.

The loss was a sorry one for the Roadkings, who scored their first 18 points from three-point zone with Patrick Cabahug and Christian Coronel combining  with three apiece.

But they failed to hit their mark in the fourth period – no thanks to Burger’s suffocating defense.

Cabahug finished with 16 points but was hardly a factor in the fourth.

Marvin Cruz, one of the country’s top amateur guards, also had a scoreless fourth quarter and fouled out late in the period that hastened the team’s downfall.
