Doha-bound Arevalo hurdles Slovenian

Second seed Filipino Czarina Mae Arevalo stamped her class over Slovenian Maja Kambic, 6-0, 6-3, yesterday to reach the second round of the $10,000 Holcim-ITF Women’s Circuit 1 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

The Asian Games-bound Arevalo, who capitalized on her steady baseline game to clinch the victory in 50 minutes, will next face Thai Varatchaya Wongtanchai, who needed an extra set to prevail over Korean Hong Da-Jung, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

Top seed and defending champion Wing-Yau Venise Chan of Hong Kong defeated Filipino wild card Denise Dy, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, to advance against Korean Lyoo-Suh Hee-Sun, who scored a 6-3, 6-3 victory over compatriot Bae Hae-Youm.

Chan’s compatriot Lam Po-Kuen, Koreans Lyoo Jae-Hee, Kim Jung-Eun and Lyoo Jae-Hee and Taiwanese qualifier Lu Yen-Hua also earned second-round berths in this tournament sponsored by the ITF Grand Slam Development Fund, Wilson balls, Century Park Hotel and the Philippine Sports Commission.

Lam rallied past Korean Kim Sae-Mi, 6-1, 6-7 (11), 6-1, Lyoo eliminated No. 8 Thassha Vitayaviroj of Thailand, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, Kim prevailed over Filipino wild card Anja Vanessa Peter, 6-2, 6-3, and Lu downed Chinese qualifier Bao Rui, 6-4, 6-4.

In the doubles, Koreans Lyoo Jae-Hee and Hong Da-Jung blasted Filipino wild cards Noelle Conchita and Noelle Nikki Zoleta, 6-0, 6-0, Vietnamese Nguyen Thuy-Dung and Chinese Lu Xi downed local wild cards Trudy Amoranto and Aileen Rogan, 6-2, 6-0, while American pair Maureen Diaz and Stacey Tan beat Filipino Jessica Marie Agra and Guamanian Michelle Pang, 6-3, 6-0, to advance to the quarterfinals.
