Rookie, returnee spark Realtors

Rookie Kelly Williams dished out the game’s highlight play on a thunderous jam in the second quarter but the comebacking Alex Cabagnot easily emerged Sta. Lucia’s best performer as the Realtors began the season on a winning note for the first time in six years.
Sta. Lucia looked good with the addition of Williams and the return of Cabagnot, pulling off a 96-88 win over Air21 in the Talk n Text PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum last night.
The Realtors kept pace with the Express’ running game in the first three quarters before seizing control in the payoff period to break away from a seesawing contest.
Cabagnot, back in the country’s Santa Lucia fold, presided over the team’s fourth-quarter attack, drawing raves from his teammates and coach Alfrancis Chua.
"The prodigal son is back and he’s a totally different person," said Chua of the 5-foot-11 Fil-Am playmaker whom they nearly recommended to be banned from the league for going absent without leave ( AWOL) during the off-season.
Cabagnot was in his elements in his return performance with Sta. Lucia, tallying 15 points, seven assists, two rebounds and one steal against one turnover in 33 minutes of action.
The University of Hawaii-Hilo product waxed hottest in the final period, scoring eight points and, at the same time, making all his teammates involved with his brilliant playmaking.
Nelbert Omolon drew a number of splendid assists from Cabagnot and led all scorers with 16 points, 11 coming in the last canto.
Williams, the league’s top pick in the rookie draft, added 11 points and 14 rebounds.
Five Realtors actually finished in double figures with three of them completing double-double jobs. Omolon also put up 12 rebounds aside from 16 rebounds and Dennis Espino tallied 15 points and 11 rebounds.
In the nightcap, Red Bull came up with a decisive run at endgame and overcame San Miguel Beer, 84-79, in a gripping duel for its second win in a row.
"We’re lucky we played San Miguel early. It’s going to be very hard to beat them the next time. They’re going to get better.
