Typhoon Milenyo postpones Legazpi City Milo marathon

The Legazpi City elimination run of the 30th National Milo Marathon slated tomorrow has been cancelled due to the widespread devastation left by typhoon Milenyo in this city Wednesday.

It will be reset to a later date, according to Milo sports event executive Pat Goc-ong
Goc-ong and national organizer Rudy Biscocho were already on their way to the Queen City of Southern Luzon Thursday morning when they received a call from Legazpi City Mayor Noel Rosal requesting for the cancellation of the event this weekend.

According to Mayor Rosal, Legazpi City has been one of the hardest hit by Milenyo. He added that 70 percent of the city’s power lines were down and some roads and bridges going to the city were impassable.

Rosal said it could take weeks before commercial flights could resume in Legazpi as the airport tower has been severely damaged.

Goc-ong, Biscocho and the Milo marathon crew also got stranded at the South Luzon Expressway on their way back to Manila Thursday afternoon.

Goc-ong is now evaluating the schedule of the remaining elimination runs of the series to find out when the Legazpi leg can be rescheduled. The Legazpi City leg was able to attract over 4,000 runners.

The weekly foot race, held in partnership with Bayview Park Hotel-Manila, Adidas, Cebu Pacific, Department of Tourism and Powerbar, is scheduled to hold its next elimination run next Sunday (Oct. 8) in Zamboanga City followed by Dagupan City on Oct. 15 and Tacloban City on Oct. 22.
