Ateneo powders La Salle in dual golf meet

Ateneo scored heavily in the top divisions highlighted by a decisive sweep in Class A to turn the tables on rival La Salle in the recent La Salle-Ateneo Golf Classic at the north and south courses of the Canlubang Golf and Country Club in Laguna.

Blue outscored the Green in four of the eight categories but an 11-0 result in Class A orchestrated by Alfonso Gillego, Katrina Gonzales, Moshe Baldo and Juan Miguel Garcia who took the top four positions and a 10-1 count in Class B decided the outcome of the dual meet.

Ateneo also topped the championship division via an 8-3 count and Class C (3-2.5) on the way to nailing a 38.5-27.5 victory that evened a best-of-three series sponsored by PLDT and Smart Communications at one match apiece after last year’s victory by La Salle.

The new format put more weight in the top three divisions which had a 5-3-2-1 point system against the 2.5-1.5-1-.5 of the lower five.

The tourney which had ABS-CBN, Citisec Online, Consolidated Distillers/Carlos Rossi, Directories Philippines Corporation, ICAP Philippines, Inc., Filpride Resources, Inc., Nation Petroleum Corporation and Pisanti, was participated in by 280 players from both sides. Turf Company staked a Club Car for a hole-in-one that nobody won.

Anthony Fernando added to the Ateneo celebration when he ruled the championship class with a two-under-par gross of 70 at the north course, edging La Salle’s Hanson So by one and teammates Louie Dacudao and Jeric Hechanova by two.

Javier Valles Olives, Joel Deveras and Gil Zerrudo also contributed to the Ateneo win with a 1-2-3 finish in Class B while Aaron Isip, Ricardo Hormillo and Gregorio Cancio neutralized the win of La Salle’s Rolando Avante in Class C by copping second to fourth places.
