Jewels try to pull away from pack

-
Montana tries to firm up its hold of the lead as it battles Magnolia even as TeleTech eyes a repeat over Granny Goose Tortillos today in the 2006 PBL Unity Cup at the San Andres Gym in Malate.

With the stroke of luck, the Jewels (7-2) found themselves on top of the heap again — thanks to Harbour Centre’s surprise 59-56 win over Rain or Shine last Sunday.

Although Magnolia is coming off a 45-65 loss to Granny Goose Tortillos, Montaña coach Nel Parado won’t take the Spinners lightly.

"We have 50-50 chance in the game because Magnolia is coming off a loss," said Parado, whose wards also beat the Spinners, 68-60, in the first round. "But just like other teams in the league, we’re prepared against them. It’s a must win for us."

Gametime is at 4 p.m.

Meantime, Granny Goose Tortillos and TeleTech clash in the 2 p.m. opener with the Snackmasters installed the overwhelming favorites against a squad out to snap a six-game losing streak.

But TeleTech coach Jerry Codiñera is hoping they could beat the Snackmasters again. TeleTech’s only win so far came at the expense of the Snackmasters, 78-69.

A Montaña victory will give the Jewels a cushion over Rain or Shine and Toyota Otis, which tote similar 7-3 marks.

With a 4-5 record, the Spinners are also in a must-win situation as they try to revive their bid for one of two automatic semis berths.

Although he acknowledges Magnolia’s depth and experience, Parado believes that their cohesiveness will give them the edge over the Spinners.

But to repeat over the Spinners, Parado said they must come up with another concerted effort, especially on the defensive end to prevent Magnolia’s 1-2 punch Arwind Santos and Kelly Williams from doing their thing.

Parado is also counting on Kenneth Bono, Reed Juntilla and the wily Froilan Baguion.
