Judokas one win short of overall title

The Philippines’ campaign in the 23rd SEA Games judo competition ended on a disappointing note as Ruth Dugaduga barely missed the gold medal that could have given the host country the overall championship yesterday at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.

Dugaduga lost by controversial hantei (decision) to Thailand’s Patcharee Pichaipat in the -78 kgs. division — a verdict that was greeted by howls of disapproval from the disgruntled hometown crowd.

Dugaduga and Patcharee both did not score in the five-minute regulation period. In the extension where the player who makes the first score wins, Dugaduga was penalized for not attacking, thus, the Thai was declared the victor.

"
They said Ruth was penalized for not attacking. That should not have been imposed because there was no more time. They should have called for an extension," said a displeased RP team coach Anicia Pedroso. — Emmanuel Villaruel
