Munti belles cop MYG gold

- Joey Villar -
Muntinlupa City ran away with the first gold medal in the first MY Games National Invitational as it dominated the football competition for 15-and-under girls yesterday at the Luneta ballpark.

Powered by Frankie Rivilla, who later bagged the Most Valuable Player trophy, Muntinlupa slammed Laguna, 10-0, then trounced host Manila, 8-0, to lord it over the field.

Laguna and Manila fought to a goal-less draw but the former defeated the latter, 2-0, in the preliminaries to cop the silver medal. The host squad settled for the bronze.

Picking up from where its football squad left off, Muntinlupa also zoomed to a share of the lead in little league baseball with Tanauan on identical 3-0 slates by bashing Palayan City, 10-3, and Antipolo, 10-0, in Day 2 of the annual event at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines grounds.

The batters from Muntinlupa booked their first triumph by blasting Taguig, 14-2, on opening day of this week-long meet presented by Globe and backed by Pagcor, San Miguel Corp., PAL, Super Ferry, Milo, Unilever, Land Bank, Speedo, Red Bull, Isuzu Manila, Intrasports and Concept Movers.

Tanauan, on the other hand, leaned on Joel Castillo’s superb pitching as it downed Palayan City, 3-0, and ripped Antipolo, 3-1 to gain a share of the lead.

The Batangueño clouters walloped Taguig, 14-0, in their first outing Monday.

Muntinlupa made it two in a row late in the day as its 12-and-under football boys’ team came home with another gold medal by finishing with three wins and a draw.

Manila, which held Muntinlupa to a 1-1 draw, settled for the silver medal while Candon from the Ilocos Region took home the bronze.

Laguna also served notice of its bid by claiming the football gold in the boys 15-and-under via a five-game sweep of its division. Bohol came in second while Manila third.

In other fronts, back-to-back UAAP champion Adamson edged University of the Philippines, 2-1, to forge a deciding Game 3.
