Ateneo makes big splash in UAAP

Michaelmars Danila took most-valuable-player and rookie-of-the-year honors at the forefront of Ateneo’s third place finish in the UAAP swimming championships held Sept. 22-25 at the Rizal Memorial pool.

Danila won six gold medals and broke one UAAP mark to show the way for the Ateneans, who finished third overall in their first year in the UAAP swimming competition. College sophomore Raem Puno had a double-gold performance.

Freshman Rozelle Louise Sarmiento earned the only gold — in the 800m freestyle — for the ladies team.

The Ateneo juniors swimming team took the championship with 11-6-7 gold-silver-bronze medals. Theodoro Sandico (3 golds — rookie of the year), Adel Barlisan (3 golds), Michael Contreras (3 golds — including relay) and Sean Paul Tan (1 gold) spearheaded the juniors to victory, defeating defending champion La Salle. The team is coached by Edward Awad Borja.
