Mitchell Martinez succeeded where her two other teammates failed, winning the gold medal in the third Asian Womens Boxing Championships via an RSC (referee-stopped-contest) victory in Kaoshiung, Taipei Thursday.
Martinez, seeing Gretchen Abaniel and Annaliza Cruz succumbed to tougher opponents, vented her ire on Pranamika Borah of India, whom she dominated early with a combination of punches en route to a second round stoppage for the 60-kg gold.
"Sana po ay sa aming pinaghirapan ay nakatulong man lang kami sa magandang pangalan ng ating bayan," said Martinez after her victory.
The Philippines thus settled for a one-gold, two-silver medal finish in the event after Abaniel bowed to Mc Marycomm of India, 11-29, in the final of the 46-kg class and Cruz lost to Chen Chia Ling of Taipei, 21-24, in the 52-kg championship.
