Twice a loser in this year’s Triple Crown series, Real Spicy ruled the leg that mattered most in local racing’s premiere event, winning the Horseman’s Cup before a big Sunday crowd at the San Lazaro Leisure Park in Carmona, Cavite yesterday.

Handled by jockey Antonio Alcasid Jr., Real Spicy fought the quick-stepping and top favorite Speed Advantage neck-and-neck majority of the punishing 2,000-meter race, then unleashed a stronger finishing kick to outclass the lean but talent-laden field for the victory worth P1 million. — R. Romualdez
