Defending champion San Beda Red Cubs used a big third quarter run to open its title-retention bid with a mighty 79-65 win over Philippine Christian U yesterday at the start of the 81st NCAA juniors division at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.
Second year forward Teree Gil Guillermo scored 14 his game high 21 points in the pivotal third period when the Red Cubs used a 23-12 blitzkrieg, breaking free from a tight 31-30 halftime lead for a 59-42 advantage entering the final frame.
The Mendiola-based dribblers twice led by 18 points, the last at 72-54 on split free throws by third year guard John Hermida with four minutes left.
Despite the win, Red Cubs coach Ato Badolato admitted they still have to improve on several things, particularly on transition defense as nine of his 13 players are newcomers and still has to adapt to the system.
"Malaki ang difference from last year, kaya sa tingin ko medyo mahihirapan kami this year," said Badolato, who lost key players Jay-R Taganas, Ogie Menor and Ed Tecson.
