Amazing Sea Hawks haul 27 swim golds

Manila Sea Hawks splashed its way to a whopping 27 gold medals to rule the one-day swimming competition yesterday in the fourth Manila Youth Games at the Rizal Memorial swimming pool.

Judith Cruz led the charge as she smashed the 100-meter freestyle record of 1 minute and 10.44 seconds for girls 9-10 years old by clocking in 1:09.13 on a day two other swimming records fell in this event backed by Red Bull, San Miguel, Globe, Super Ferry, IntrASports, Concept Movers, Air21, PAGCOR and the Philippine Sports Commission.

Cruz finished the day with three golds, the same number hauled by teammate Lea Navoto and Belos Saston, Edlyn Son of the Philippine Columbian Association, and Johansen Aguilar of Barangay 659.

Other record-breakers were Gian Berino of Paco’s Sun for All Children who eclipsed the 100-m breaststroke record of 1:10.44 in the boys’ side by timing in 1:08.43 while Hadassah Diaz of the City College of Manila erased the 50-m breaststroke record of 43.45 with a time of 42.67.

Sister of Mary, for its part, made its presence felt by capturing four gold medals in Day 1 of athletics event at the Rizal Track and Football Field.

Hazel Peña opened the day by copping the girls’ long jump gold for 13-15 years old with a distance of 4.55 meters while Marilou Amila followed suit by topping the javelin throw of the same age group with a heave of 22.20 meters.

Providing the other gold for Sisters of Mary were Richelle Minggin and Meriam Colangoy, who ruled the shot put and javelin for 16-17 year-old girls, respectively.

Over at the Rizal Tennis Center, District 4 continued its rampage in lawn tennis by copping three of the five gold medals staked in the doubles competition, a day after hauling four of the seven golds in singles.

In football action, District 5 trounced District I-A, 3-1 to rule the Under-10 bracket while Magat Salamat blanked Aurora Quezon, 2-0, to cop the under-12 division.

Other results were San Beda A smashing San Beda C, 3-0, for the school and club gold medal, Leveriza edging District 1, 1-0, for the Under-15 plum, and Dr. Albert Elementary School walloping Lakandula, 4-0, for the Under-10 title.

In other fronts, Smokey Mountain trounced Barangay Beata, 15-9, to rule elementary baseball while Ramon Magsaysay High School ended Villegas School’s three-year reign with a 14-9 win to top high school softball.

In volleyball, District 3-B roared to a 3-0 (win-loss) start to jumpstart its campaign at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. It won over District 702, 25-15, 25-8, St. Scholastica, 25-17, 25-14, and St. Scholastica B, 25-16, 25-14.

District 3-C also had a solid start, hurdling three of its first four matches. It posted triumphs over Dr. Albert and District 5-805, 25-0, 25-0, and District 673, 25-12, 25-10, before getting tripped by St. Scholastica,11-25, 13-25.
