Cover Girl tops Lakambini race

-
Cover Girl added the Lakambini Stakes crown to her growing list of victories as the Triple Crown leg winner dominated the event yesterday in a record-equalling run at the Santa Ana Park.

With ace jockey Jonathan Hernandez aboard, Cover Girl stalked the quick-stepping Moab in the early going then swept past the fast-fading leader with hardly a whip before galloping home to a three-length victory.

The outstanding favorite clocked 1:53 over the 1,800-meter voyage, matching Material Maker’s effort in the Mitra Cup. She had fraction times of 13’-23-25’-24-28.

The win netted a guaranteed gross prize of P450,000 for the C & H Enterprises, owner of the prized filly who ruled the first leg of this year’s Triple Crown but lost the last two to Empire King.

Moab settled for the P168,750 second prize while Cool Runnings finished third worth P93,750. -- Ramon Romualdez
