Sy ousts Lagman in Toby’s 14-U

Ninth seed Akio Hari Ong Sy eliminated seventh seed Julius Lagman, 6-3, 0-6, 6-2, yesterday to reach the boys’ 14-under quarterfinals of the Toby’s-Philta Junior Championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Sy will face unseeded Jonathan Murrell, who scored a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Juan Gabriel Peña. In other matches, No. 1 Pablo Olivarez II breezed past No. 15 Kyle Cordero, 6-0, 6-0, No. 2 El Santo Santos defeated Jose Lorenzo Ferrer, 6-1, 6-0, No. 8 Mark Balce survived Bernardine Siso, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4, and Alvin Manalastas downed Erwin Tamayo, 6-0, 6-0.

In the boys’ 12-under division, fourth seed Joseph Baldonado defeated Tim Polero, 7-6 (3), 6-2, to forge a quarterfinal duel with seventh seed Alberto Villamor, who beat No. 10 Jacob Lagman, 6-1, 7-6 (4).

Other winners were No. 1 Akio Hari Ong Sy over John Marie Altiche, 6-0, 6-0, No. 2 Kim Ivor Saraza over Pemrick Alina, 6-1, 6-0, No. 3 Bernardine Siso over Prince Salvacion, 6-0, 6-1, No. 5 Juan Gabriel Peña over Francisco Cabrera, 6-1, 6-1, No. 6 Kyle Cordero over Fredmore Dominisac, 6-0, 6-0, and No. 8 Leander Lazaro over Niko Daza, 6-0, 6-2.

In the unisex 10-under class, fifth seed Jasmine Tan Ho outplayed Jainul Al-Khady, 7-5, 7-6 (5), to advance in the quarters against No. 6 Dheo Talatayod, a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Maika Tanpoco. Also advancing were Daniel Luis Macalino, Bernardine Siso, Jacob Lagman, Tim Polero, Joana Peña and Kim Polero.

In the girls’ 14-under division, top seed Jessica Agra blasted Jia Elesis, 6-0, 6-0 and No. 2 Bambi Zoleta blanked Lynda Marie Santos, 6-0, 6-0 to reach the quarters. Winners in the 12-under division were Zhane Quitara, Sarah Jane Lim, Chyna Mamawal, Jia Elesis, Regina Santiago, Irina Quinatadcan and Maika Tanpoco.
