BACOLOD CITY President Arroyo hit three birds with one stone during a scheduled stop in this City of Smiles last Friday.
First, she declared the CHED National Palaro open at the spanking Panaad Sports Complex, then reiterated her program for the youth before the close to 3,000 participating college students, and later in the evening gathered a big group of local politicians regarding the forthcoming national elections.
Her program for the youth includes the Students Assistance Fund (SAF) for college students, and the granting of vocational and technology training that would benefit members of marginalized families.
The program, she hoped, would help solve the financial difficulties of many parents in giving their children quality education.
During her brief opening speech, the Chief Executive challenged all the athletes and officials "to observe greater teamwork and discipline" so that they can also "win the battle of the 21st Century."
The President, who came with her vice presidential candidate, Sen. Noli de Castro, and Senate President Franklin Drilon, was introduced by Rep. Monico Puentevella, who is once again running for one of six Congressional seats here.
"We feel so privileged that the President, despite her hectic campaign schedule, joined us for the opening ceremony," said Puentevella, chairman of the House Committee on Youth and Sports, and a GMA supporter.
Wearing a beige business attire and under heavy security, the President also congratulated Bacolod City for being named one of the satellite venues for the 2005 Philippine SEA Games. Events to be held here are boxing, football, volleyball, water polo and weightlifting.
"I congratulate Bacolod City for gaining the right to co-host the SEA Games na magaganap dito sa inyo," said the President, who made her way inside the Panaad Sports Complex at around six in the evening as she came all the way from Pangasinan.
Later in the evening, the President met with local politicians at the Business Inn where CHED officials hosted a welcome dinner for those working the games.
The President stayed overnight here then pushed back with her campaign schedule the following morning. Abac Cordero
