Pioneer badminton hosts tourney

-
Pioneer Badminton kicks off its calendar for the year with a summer tournament and a training camp which aims to bring competition to a higher level in the local badminton scene.

As a refresher, Pioneer Badminton will host a team competition tournament open to all badminton enthusiasts April 2-3 where participants undergo a leveling system to determine their range of skill.

Pioneer Badminton head Edmin Tarriela said the event would be followed by the Epson Summer Camp slated April 12-May 3 (first batch) and May 10-May 31 (second batch).

"We have lined up two activities this summer for badminton aficionados willing to enhance their skill and learn the fundamentals of the sport," said Tarriela, who organized three high-caliber tournaments last year.

Interested parties may call 746-0828 or 638-5343 for details. Deadline of registration for the tournament is set on March 12 while participants for the Epson Summer Camp should enroll before April 12.

Camp director Eg Lim will facilitate the Epson Summer Camp along with former national teammates Malvin Alcala and Stephen Yan.

With 10 training sessions per batch, Lim and the other coaches try to zero in on the physical conditioning and motor skills development highly required of the sport.

Physical conditioning modules will concentrate on stamina, endurance, flexibility, agility, muscle tone and hands, eyes, legs coordination while the skill aspect delves on proper footwork, court coverage, stroke refinement and shot variety.

The tournament has set its elimination and leveling schedule on March 13-14 and March 20-21 from 10 in the morning up to 4 p.m.
