STAR sports columnist inducted in La Salle Hall of Fame

Philippine STAR sports columnist Joaquin Henson will be inducted in the De La Salle Sports Hall of Fame for his contribution to sports as a journalist and broadcaster during the school’s annual homecoming on Saturday at the Taft Avenue campus.

Henson joins an elite cast of inductees. Others to be enshrined are the late Conrado (Dodo) Ayuyao, Pocholo Ramirez, Rafael Villareal and Raffy Esteva.

The De La Salle Sports Hall of Fame was launched in 1993. So far, 70 have been inducted. Among the prominent Hall of Famers are San Miguel Corp. chairman Eduardo (Danding) Cojuangco, Tito Eduque, Ramoncito Campos, Manolet Araneta, Eddie Decena, Marcos Roces Jr., Kurt Bachmann, Johnny Jose, Lito Prieto, Lim Eng Beng, Tommy Manotoc, Philip Juico, Paeng Nepomuceno, Celso Dayrit, Carlos Velez, Steve Hontiveros, Miguel Bilbao, Andres Franco, Enrique Valles, Chito Calvo, Jose Esteva and Rogelio LaO.

Henson was cited for his active role in promoting sports consciousness in media and described as a pillar in the industry. He had received numerous awards and recognitions here and abroad for his outstanding work as a sports journalist and broadcaster.

Ayuyao was a top racing official of various national and international motoring organizations.

Ramirez’ career as a motorcar racer has spanned four decades and earned for him a record six Driver of the Year awards.

Villareal was a star football player for La Salle and the Yco club. He saw action for the Philippine Youth football team that represented the country in several international tournaments.

Esteva’s father Jose was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1994. Like his father, Esteva was a top athlete who excelled in football, basketball and volleyball as a La Salle varsity player. In 1969, Esteva was given the La Salle Presidential award for athletics upon his graduation. He also played for the Philippines and Meralco football teams.
