Camp Evangelista cops PAL seniors title

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY Camp Evangelista shot a final round 215 at the Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club to capture the Friendship Division pennant in the 18th Philippine Airlines Senior golf championship.
Together with their earlier 218 at the par 72, 6,412-yard Del Monte Golf Club in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon, the local bets, who have their own nine-hole club in nearby Barangay Camp Evangelista, made 433 to rule the Friendship Division.
Art Mar collected 47 points via the modified PAL scoring system that awards one point for a double bogey, two bogey, three par, four birdie and so on to lead his team.
Aurelio Ponce de Leon backed up Mar with 46, Victor Arancon came up with 43, Raul Noble contributed 40 and Romy Sindac added 39 in the eight-player, five-to-count team event.
Back at Del Monte, Luisita started its defense of the Championship Division with 250, 17 points ahead of closest pursuer Wack Wack and 19 up on Alabang Country Club.
And Crystal Springs and Eagle Ridge shot similar 213s to share the first round lead in the Sportswriters Division. Bacolod scored 207 to take third, followed by Sienna Plantation 203 and Maharlika 202.
Ten big companies are the major sponsors for this championship headed by ABS-CBN Global, Airbus Industrie, CNN International and GE Aircraft Engines. The others are Golden Nugget Hotel Las Vegas, Johnnie Walker, Manila Broadcasting Corporation, Radio Mindanao Network, Royal Caribbean International and UMBN.
Joey 92.3, 96.3 WRock, PLDT and 105.1 Crossover are the corporate backers while Asia Brewery Inc., Boeing, Boysen Pacific Paint, Century Park Hotel, INQ7.net, Jam 88.3, Tanduay Rhum and www.philstar.com are the minor supporters.
Mactan Coral combined for 196 also at Pueblo de Oro to go with its earlier 214 effort at Del Monte to settle for second place with 410.
Rodante Joya, a retired Philippine Air Force general, scored 43 points to pace Mactan Coral Golf Club, Cebus only public course.
Other scorers were Romeo Alegre with 41, Edgar Pacubas 38 and Maj. Gen. Ramon Ragasa, who heads the PAF tactical operations command, and Pete Cantillas with 37 apiece.
