Tambunting dominates Southwoods tourney

-
Joseph Tambunting sizzled with a gross four-over-par 76 at the Masters course for a net 72 that gave him the Class A crown in another smash-hit monthly tournament that opened the season for members of the Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club recently.

Actually, Tambunting finished tied with Freddie Mendoza, who also had a net 72, but ended up winning the battle among 0-9 handicappers after the countback. Sevi Liao barely missed forging a three-way tie with his 73 giving him third place.

The tournament fell just a player short of the maximum field of 288, an indication of how tough winning was for all the seven division champions in the event sponsored by Mitsubishi Motors, Samsung, Royal Caribbean International, Northwest Airlines, Thai Airways and Wilson.

Butch de Guzman captured the Class B division (10-15 handicap), Billy Gualberto ruled Class C (16-21), Domingo Amistad won in Class D (22-27) and Tony Go prevailed in Class E (28-36).

In the ladies division, Arlette Dizon topped Group I and Christine Dy was the Group II winner.

Jose Vale and Karl Lee didn’t make it to the tournament winners’ list but went home with the biggest prizes.

Lee aced the third hole of the Masters and was rewarded with a golfing holiday to Bangkok courtesy of Thai Airways. Vale’s name, meanwhile, was picked as the winner of the grand raffle prize — a 25-inch Samsung Flat TV.

All division winners received 20-inch Samsung TV sets, the second placers each got DVD players and the third ranked entries got a 14-inch TV.
