Superal super in Samsung jungolf bash

Crystal Superal, a member of a golfing clan, sparkled with a 68 yesterday to steal the thunder from her more illustrious peers in the Samsung Philippine International Junior Golf Championship.

The long-hitting Superal conquered Wack Wack’s par 72 East course with two eagles and seven birdies to take the first round lead in the 12 and under girls’ division.

What marred her round were a triple bogey seven and three bogeys to settle for a two-shot lead over Thailand’s Phuntmahamrung Panpak and three ahead of Hong Kong’s Demi Mak.

"My 3-wood Callaway my dad bought two days ago was the key," said Superal, 12, the granddaughter of the late pro Wenceslao. "Of course, I putted very well."

She collected those eagles when she sank a 15-yard putt on the fifth and six-footer on 12.

Teng Kao of Taiwan, 9, came up with a 73 to pace the boys’ 10 and under division with Hong Kong’s Tiger Lee, 7, named after the current world’s No. 1 Woods, taking second place with a 79.

Thailand’s Anusorn Songsem carded a 77 to go with his first-round 79 to wrest the lead over compatriot Chitratanatham Chakrit in the boys’ Class A’s Division I with 157.

Chakrit, the first-day leader with a 77, shot an 80 to go down to a tie for second place with Jenz Tecson of the Philippines, who carded a 78 to be at 157.

Matthew Manotoc, the lanky, long-hitting 15-year-old bet from the Philippines, struggled with a 90 but that was enough to allow him to take solo top spot in the Division II of the boys’ Class A.
