Shelved last year due to lack of sponsor and a row with a local golf club, the Philippine Open hopes to make up for that absence with a grand staging this year with DHL as title sponsor of the countrys premier golf championship firing off Feb. 26 at the Mimosa Golf and Country Club in Pampanga.
DHL, the worlds leading express and logistics provider, recently forged a partnership with the NGAP for the 88th staging of Asias oldest golfing event. The agreement was sealed through a contract-signing over luncheon at the Manila Golf and Country Club with Charles Brewer, DHL Express Philippines country manager, and NGAP president Rod Feliciano as signatories.
"DHL is supporting the 88th Philippine Open as a tribute to Filipino excellence in sports. Through the Philippine Open, DHL encourages world-class Philippine golfers to participate actively and earn recognition for the Philippines worldwide," said Brewer. "Judging by the popularity of golf in the Philippines, we believe we are also boosting tourism efforts here."
The four-day event, back as one of the legs of the Asian PGA Tour, will be played the week after the rich Carlsberg Malaysia Open and hopes to draw some of the big guns competing in the $1.2 million event in Kuala Lumpur.
Former RP Open winners Gerald Rosales and Cassius Casas are leading the local challenge while defending champion Rick Gibson of Canada has confirmed his participation to the blue-ribbon event.
