Longshot Dandansoy pulls off stunner in invitational race
January 5, 2004 | 12:00am
Dandansoy pulled off perhaps the most stunning victory by the least unfancied horse in a stakes race in recent memory when she ruled the Philippine Good Work Mission Foundation, Inc. Invitational Race yesterday before a bewildered crowd at the San Lazaro Leisure Park in Carmona, Cavite.
Superbly handled by top jock Dominador Borbe, the five-year-old bay galloper unleashed a strong finishing kick the last 150 meters and swept fast another longshot Free Wind at the wire to snatch the victory worth P240,000 for owner Joseph Dyhengco.
Dandansoy sold only P12,892 out of P1,203,416 or just one percent of the grand total sales of the days featured race sponsored by Philracom, easily the most astonishing win by a longshot in recent memory.
Bolting out of the gate second to last in a nine-horse field, the superbly-conditioned Dandansoy joined big guns Buena Sera, Time Gentleman and Material Maker at the backstretch then, under Borbes constant urgings and despite running four-wide, she caught up with pacesetters Free Wind and Enchanted Mist at the top of the stretch before galloping home to that spectacular victory.
She was timed 1:40.5 with quartertimes of 24-23-25-27 over the one-mile race.
The double combination of 6-8 for Races 7-8 gave P2,240 for every P5 bet while the forecast 8-1 netted P2,927. Ramon Romualdez
