West Bound gallops for TC’s second crown

After posting an impressive win in the first leg, West Bound sets out as the clear favorite today when the second leg of this year’s Triple Crown, known as the J.V. Ongpin Cup, is staged at the newly-constructed San Lazaro Leisure Park in Carmona, Cavite.

Owned by the Mamon family, West Bound will occupy the No. 1 post in the 1,900-meter race, which lured eight of the country’s top three-year-olds. The race sponsored by the Philippine Racing Commission offers a total cash prize of P1.67 million.

"We are certainly thrilled to host this very prestigious racing event in our new racing complex. We would like to assure the racing public that they can look forward to a truly exciting program," said MJCI president and chief executive Alfonso Reyno Jr.

Bidding to frustrate West Bound in his bid to win the Triple Crown are 2002 Juvenile champion Security Master, Binay Cup winner Success Story and multiple stakes race winner High Octane plus newcomers Speed Machine, Galapagos, Iverson and Kokopelli. — Ramon Romualdez
