Hawks turn back Dolphins

University of Manila, hobbled by fouls down the stretch, narrowly turned back Philippine Christian University, 86-80, yesterday in the Petron-Grudge Games of Champions League 2003 at the Makati Coliseum.
Nine schools from this pre-tournament phase, co-sponsored by San Miguel, PCSO, Milo, Adidas and championsleague.com.ph, will get invitations to the Round-of-32 national finals in November.
Center Ronnie Matias had 21 of his 29 points in the first two quarters, going seven of 10, while forward Louie Aquino added 13 of his 20 with three three-point shots as the Hawks, under veteran coach Loreto Tolentino, dominated the Dolphins.
The score was 22-13 after the first quarter and 42-29 at the half.
