Triple-V Group president Vic-Vic Villavicencio supported this fifth leg of the 12-round Angler of the Year (AOY) derby of the Philippine Game Fishing Foundation (PGFF) at San Vicente, Sta. Ana, Cagayan.
Four-time AOY Rico Gueco and 2002 AOY Mayenn Ordoveza ruled the first two days but settled for second place at 100.3 kgs.
Edmund Lim and Glibert Medios placed third with 93.8 kg. Medios landed the largest sailfish at 35.7 kg. Other heaviest fish awardees are Mario Tayag, Dorado, 14 kg; Ignacio Locsin, Tanguigui, 11.9 kg; Rey Buencamino, Wahoo, 10 kg; and Fr. Nana Piva, Barracuda, 5.1 kg.
The Gueco-Ordoveza and Lim-Medios tandems are the buddy boat team champions on 194.1 kg total. Tycangco and last years 45th nationals champ Henry Ordinanza placed second buddy boat team at 173 kg. Bong Neri and Nonie Capili, 140.2 kg, were third.
PGFF managing director and two-time AOY Rey Buencamino switched places with Jimmy Flores for the overall AOY lead when Flores first day catch of 40.6 kg was "DQed" for late check-in. Edmund Lim closed in on third. Two more heavy tackle AOY events are the June 12-14 Toots Echauz Sportfishing tournament at San Vicente, supported by Lourdes Echauz Holdings, Inc. and the June 27-29 Standard Insurance Tuna Fishing in Palawan.
The 32 anglers boated some 180 qualifying fish, 5-kg up, weighing over 1.4 tons. Buencamino said, "Dorados are so numerous they beat the Sailfish to the anglers baits." Other fish caught were Tanguigui, Talakitok, Wahoo, and Barracuda.
