CCP, TIP booters share lead in CUSA tourney

Central Colleges of the Philippines and Technological Institute of the Philippines posted contrasting victories Monday to share the top spot in the CUSA football tournament at the Ateneo de Manila University football field.

The Bobcats escaped a 2-1 thriller over Trinity College of Quezon City while TIP blanked Philippine College of Criminology, 5-0.

CCP and TIP improved to 2-0 while their victims dropped to 0-2.

In the day’s other game, University of Assumption-Pampanga routed opening day winner De La Salle-Araneta University, 5-1.

The Pelicans and DLS-AU now tote similar 1-1 cards.

Football is making a debut in the CUSA calendar.

CUSA president Atty. Crispino Reyes said football is one sport where Filipinos can excel in the world stage.

Six teams are taking part in the CUSA tournament, the final event of the season.

In the race for overall championship, CCP continued to pace the field with 134 points while winning three events.

The Bobcats earned 25 points for bagging the men’s volleyball crown and got 15 points each from their victorious men’s and women’s table tennis squads.

UA-P is far second with 113, winning the women’s volleyball and women’s badminton titles.

Third in the list is Philippine Maritime Institute, barely breaking the century mark with 101 points. The Admirals captured their second straight women’s basketball plum that netted them 25 points while getting 15 from their champion tankers.

Trinity is running fourth with 90 points, getting its lone championship trophy from its women’s swimming team.

Rounding out the top five is TIP with 69, ruling chess and men’s badminton. Metro Manila College is sixth with 45, PCCR is seventh with 43, St. Jude College is eighth with 37, Las Piñas College, winner in men’s basketball, is ninth with 35, De La Salle-Araneta University is 10th with 34, Manuel L. Quezon is 11th with 29, PATTS College of Aeronautics is 12th with 9 and De Ocampo Memorial College is 13th with 2.
