Ateneo, LSGH pace student golf

Ateneo jumped ahead in the men’s college and boys grade school division even as La Salle-Greenhills surged on top in boys high school in the first round of the Samsung National Interscholastics golf tournament at the Villamor Golf Club course.

John Gobing and Vendrick Tan tallied 29 points each while Juan Carlos Reyes had 24 as Ateneo posted 82 points to move up by five over La Salle A in men’s college play. The Ateneo ladies started work on a possible sweep by staying nine points clear of University of Asia and the Pacific.

Behind Gabriel Villareal’s 30 points, Ateneo stepped ahead of the fancied Sto. Niño Learning Center by one point with the outputs of Amado Eustaquio (19) and Carlo Legaspi (12) making it 60 for the Loyola golfers under the four-to-play, three-to-count format.

The LSGH squad made up of Ian Intal, Andy Ugarte, Kevin Lachica and Magnum Bakunawa aggregated 86 for a five-point lead over sister team La Salle-Zobel with Ateneo A a far third at 57.

It was an all-Poveda show in the girls elementary play with Nicole Serapio and Charlene Abalos giving their "C" team a six-point cushion after an 18 and 17, respectively. The D team banked on the 19 of Cristina Potenciano and the 10 of Katya dela Cruz to stay in the second.

Nonoy Negrido of MCA-Montessori fired 37 points equivalent to one-under in medal play to lead Cebu’s Bayani Garcia by four in the high school individual of the event also backed by Gatorade, Fila, Custom Clubmakers and Hotshots Flame-Grilled Burgers.

The other individual leaders were Gobing and Tan and Kim Ong in the college division, Debbie de Villa (33) of Greenhills Christian and Dottie Ardina in the girls elementary and John Kier Abdon (44) in the special 11-under
