Tambunting, Badillo rule Chairman’s Cup

Joseph Tambunting grossed a 73 and Mario Badillo netted a 63 at the Legends course Saturday to emerge the biggest winners in this year’s Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club Chairman’s Cup.

That one-over par effort enabled Tambunting to win overall gross honors while that 63 powered the 14-handicapper Badillo to the overall net title.

A big field of 270 players – from members, guests and ladies – came to play in the 18-hole event in honor of Manila Southwoods chairman of the board Robert John Sobrepeña.

Accugolf, Brite Smile, Circulan, Gainers, International Elevator Equipments Inc., Miramar Tuna Belly, Nestlé, Smart Communications and Wilson were the tournament sponsors.

Sobrepeña, the honoree, also played in the foursome with Sports and Games chairman Freddie Mendoza, Jimmy Borromeo and Paco Gonzales.

"On behalf of our club, I would like to congratulate all the winners," Sobrepeña said. "Above all, I would like to thank all those who came to play in this tournament."

Tambunting, who has an eight handicap, was the tournament’s double winner. With a net 65, he also won Class A honors. Thirdy Escano made 69 to place second.

Manolo Agojo came up with a net 64 to rule Class B with Carlos Legaspi shooting a 66 to settle for second place honors.

Roberto Agojo toured the nearby Masters course with a net 66 to capture the Class C crown, two strokes ahead of second placer Roger Adajar.

Mars Avendano came up also with a net 66 at the Masters to rule Class D, just a shot ahead of Milton Lalisan. Elmer Acance tallied a net 65 to top Class E. Aner Anda was second with a 69.

The Ladies’ Division tiara went to Arlette Dizon after shooting a net 63. Second was Teruko Kitaguchi with a 67.

Hanson So Jr., a three handicapper and a member of the Southwoods team, netted a 66 to rule the Sponsors-Guests Division. Yoshiaki Ichimura settled for second with a 70.

All the winners won beautiful Italian trophies. Lucky participants also brought home handsome prizes in kind raffled during the awards ceremony.
