Filipino world speed shoot champ hurts shoulder

- Abac Cordero -
BUSAN – Jethro Dionisio, the country’s best hope in the trap event of the shooting competition in the 14th Asian Games, skipped practice Monday after experiencing some pain on his right shoulder.

Dionisio, the former World Speed Shoot champion and winner of two silver medals in last year’s Kuala Lumpur SEA Games, did not join in the team practice at the Changwon International Shooting Range, according to RP delegation chief physician Dr. Raul Canlas.

"He experienced some pain but he’s fine. He was just asked to skip practice and I don’t think his performance will be affected by it," said Canlas.

Dionisio arrived Thursday night and has been practicing almost daily, gearing up for the shooting competitions scheduled Oct. 2 to 8. He felt the pain after waking up Monday morning to a temperature of 18 degrees.

Shooting ranks third in the most number of gold medals to be disputed here with 42, next only to athletics with 45 and swimming with 43. Overall, 420 gold medals are at stake in 38 sports here.

The other members of the RP shoot team are Jasmin Luis, Therese Cantada, Gay Corral, Aric Ang, Jaime Recio, Nathaniel Padilla and Emerito Concepcion.
