Torre, ACCA to set GM chess institute

To pursue its goal of promoting chess in schools, the Active Chess Center of Asia (ACCA) has linked up with Grandmaster Eugene Torre to form the Grandmaster Eugenio Torre Chess Institute (GETCI).
Under the GETCI program, chess clubs will be set up in schools; clinics and workshops and tournaments will be held to stir interest among schoolchildren. Simultaneous exhibitions will also be staged in elementary and high schools all over the country.
The first of a series of chess-in-schools workshops to be conducted by Torre will be held on Sept. 21 at the First Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities (FAITH) in Tanauan City, Batangas. The event will also mark the formal launching of the GETCI.
The one-day activity will consist of a chess lecture and a seminar on how to organize tournaments and chess clubs in schools and the benefits of teaching chess.
Torre will be assisted by chess scholar Elmer Sangalang and national master Robert Suelo.
Participants will come from elementary and high schools, both private and public, from the Southern Luzon area which include: First Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities; Dela Salle Unified School (Lipa); University of Batangas; St. Thomas Academy; Our Lady of Fatima Academy; Lipa City Colleges; Our Lady of Caysasay Academy; St. Marys Educational Institute; Maryhill College; Sacred Heart College; G.B. Lontok Memorial School; Inosloban-Marawoy NHS; Pinagkawitan HS; Batangas NHS; Lipa NHS; Fernando Airbase HS; Bauan West ES; Bauan West ES; Bauan East ES; Bauan Tech HS; Sto. Tomas ES. Amaya HS; Naic ES; Lemery Pilot ES. An affiliation fee of P500 will be charged per school.
