SURREY CITY, BC Mandaluyong Citys Belen Ramirez impressed the international crowd by placing second in the homerun derby held in the recently-concluded Canada Cup Womens Softball Championships here.
But Mandaluyong failed to salvage even 13th place, losing to Florida, 7-5, in a playoff for the right to play for the consolation round trophy.
In the homerun derby, Ramirez, the Lady Technocrats catcher, looked on the way to bagging the top honor and the $500 prize when she sent the ball over the fence thrice. But American Christobal Bustos blasted five homers to bag the title and the cash reward.
Ramirez did not win any prize, but her stint in the derby made the small Filipino community in this largest city in British Columbia proud to be Filipino.
