Depleted Eagles still soar over Blu Kings

Later in the night, Challenge Cup champion Shark Energy Drink broke out from a six-game losing skid via a 79-70 triumph over Kutitap Toothpaste.

The Blue Eagles, now 12-5, showed determination and teamwork especially down the stretch where they held the Detergent Kings scoreless in the final 38.9 seconds.

Mainstays Rich Alvarez, Enrico Villanueva and Larry Fonacier all exploded in the pivotal final period while Jec Chia proved himself a worthy replacement for the injured Membrere.

Alvarez led Ateneo scorers with 19 points including two crucial triples in the last three minutes while Villanueva and Fonacier added 11 apiece. Chia, on the other hand, finished with 11 points, four rebounds and three steals.

"I believe the boys are really determined to win this game despite the injuries that plagued the team. Alvarez, Villanueva and Fonacier rose to the challenge and so with Chia who really proved himself worthy of the breaks," said Ateneo-Hapee-Negros Navigation coach Joel Banal.

"The struggle is not yet over and we’re definitely going for the last two wins to claim the No.1 spot," he added.

The game stood still at 55-all after Arnold CAlo drilled in two freethrows off VIllanueva with 3:14 remaining in the game.
