USJR claims Nestea crown

BORACAY – University of San Jose-Recoletos played a highly-conservative game to make up for its lack of height and power, and stunned reigning champion Foundation University, 21-15, 19-21, 15-10, to rule the 2002 Nestea Beach Volleyball University Championships at the Hey Jude Beach front here yesterday.

Learning from their mistakes last year, Jerome Capada and Norvie Labuga refused to fight Kent Bulabon and Isidro Bongcasan in a slambang attacking game, sticking to well-placed tip and passing shots which proved the key in their successful revenge against their Dumaguete rivals.

Capada and Labuga were spearheads of the USJR teams which bowed to the FU teams of Bulabon and Bongcasan in a pair of USJR vs FU duels in the semifinals last year.

The Cebu lads of coach Grace Antigua, a former national indoor and beach volley player, used practically the same strategy as they topped the Mapua Tech team of Albert Alano and Eliezer Collado, 20-21, 21-14, 15-3.

Bulabon and Bongcasan advanced to the finals against Capada and Labuga via a 21-19, 21-18 demolition of PATTS’ Christian Pascual and Robert Crisencio.

Earlier in the day, Adamson rode high on the outstanding all-around game of Ailane Quina to beat Foundation U, 21-19, 21-10, for the women’s crown in this beach volley spectacle sponsored by Speedo, Asian Spirit, Astring-o-Sol, Mikasa, Kenny Rogers Roasters, WG&A Superferry, Carl’s Jr. and Boracay Resorts, Bars and Restaurants, Boracay Gold Crowne Club, Villa de de Oro, Club 10 Beach Resort, Crystal Sand, Alyssa Resort, Club Bazzura, Summer Place, Caribo and Hey Jude.
